Wai'anae Wildfires 2005
On 10 May 2005, a small 150 acre wildfire that began within Nanakuli Valley (Wai'anae Range) in the west O'ahu (Hawai'i) quickly spread throughout the valley, reaching a maximum size of 2,000 acres by 15 May. Because of the size and intense heat of the blaze, satellite-based thermal imagery collected by the NOAA Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) sensor allowed for the detection and monitoring of the wildfire evolution. Below are examples of AVHRR images showing the strong thermal signature and dense smoke plumes resulting from the fires in western O'ahu.
